There are two ways to get it wrong: holding on to something that’s really already over — and leaving something before it could show what it had in it. Gate 42 provides the energy to let a process you’ve started grow until its potential has unfolded. Growth here means more than getting bigger: a learning phase grows when what you’ve learned becomes usable.
At some point, ending is part of growing too — securing results, tying up loose ends, freeing the energy that was tied up. The honest question then is: what really still needs time, and what are you only holding on to out of habit? Gate 42 doesn’t supply the pressure to start a new cycle, by the way; that belongs to Gate 53.

Gate 42 has exactly one partner gate: Gate 53 in the Root center. Only together do they form channel 42-53 — Maturation, the format of beginning, middle and end.

When the quality is mature
- Letting go of the script. Being fully involved, being disappointed or relieved — and still acknowledging what the process actually produced, even if it looks different than planned.
- Staying power, with your eyes open. Not reconsidering at every difficulty — but noticing when conditions change, and wrapping things up so nothing slips unnoticed into the next cycle.
- Letting go of the form, keeping the meaning. A phase of work can end without being written off — that way, completion becomes the last step of growth, not its opposite.
When it comes under pressure
- Waiting for a better later. Satisfaction is only allowed once the project is done — the present becomes a waystation, and any other outcome feels like failure.
- Holding on to what’s run its course. Carrying on because you’ve already invested so much — it ties up your strength and mistakes completion for loss.
- Quitting before things mature. As soon as routine sets in, you move on — and miss the experience that only shows up in the middle or at the end.
- Getting stuck in a bond that doesn’t fit. Sacral staying power can also carry a cycle that was never entered correctly — then the problem isn’t the persevering, but the commitment.
Gate 42 through the year
Your chart is a snapshot — but the Sun keeps moving and passes through all 64 gates every year, each for about six days. Around April 10 to 16 it’s in Gate 42: that’s when its theme is in the air as cosmic weather — for everyone, whether or not the gate is activated in your own chart.

I have Gate 42 — so why is letting go so hard for me?
The gate is the energy for completion, not an automatic switch. The time and feelings you’ve invested make letting go harder — the mature question is: has the potential unfolded, or am I just holding on to a form that has done its job?
Do I have to finish everything I start?
No. The value of Gate 42 isn’t an endless list of ticked-off duties. Some tasks get handed on, and some endings consist of consciously deciding not to continue — whether to stay or to end it is up to your Strategy and Authority.
