Many of us have learned to make decisions mostly with our heads: collect reasons, weigh the pros and cons, be as sensible as possible and ideally know quickly what’s right. Human Design starts somewhere else. Your inner Authority describes a way of deciding that doesn’t come from reasoning your way to the best answer. It shows what, in your own design, tells you whether something is right for you.
Strategy and Authority work together
In Human Design, Strategy and Authority go together but do different jobs. Your Strategy describes how to engage with life in a way that suits your Type. Your Authority then helps you answer whether a concrete opportunity, invitation or decision is right for you.
Think of it as two steps, one after the other: your Strategy keeps you from starting or forcing every situation from your head. Your Authority then guides your decision once you’re in an actual situation. What that guidance looks like varies from person to person. For some it shows up instantly in the body; for others, clarity needs time, a conversation or even a longer cycle.
That doesn’t make your mind unimportant. It can gather information, understand connections, compare experiences and help you make sense of a situation. In Human Design, it just isn’t meant to be your inner decision-maker. That can feel strange at first, especially if you’ve learned that you need good reasons for every decision.
Why there’s a hierarchy of Authorities
You don’t get to choose your Authority. It comes from the definition and the connections in your bodygraph, and Human Design has a fixed order for it. If an Authority applies to your chart, it takes precedence; the ones further down the list then don’t also determine how you decide.
- Is the Solar Plexus defined?Emotional Authority
- If not: is the Sacral defined?Sacral Authority
- If not: is the Spleen defined?Splenic Authority
- If not: is the Heart/Ego defined — connected to the Throat or the G center?Ego Authority
- If not: is the G center connected to the Throat?Self-Projected Authority
- If not: is nothing defined below the Throat?Mental Authority (environment)
- And if no center at all is defined?Lunar Authority — the Reflector
This matters because an intense feeling, a strong hunch or a particular impulse isn’t automatically your Authority. What counts isn’t which signal feels strongest right now, but which Authority your chart as a whole gives you.
The seven Authorities at a glance
The Authorities differ a great deal in how clarity about a decision can feel. Here’s each one in detail:
- Emotional Authority — clarity comes over time, not at the high or low point of an emotional wave.
- Sacral Authority — an immediate physical response to something concrete, felt as a pull toward it, a surge of energy or a pulling back.
- Splenic Authority — a quiet, instant impulse in the present moment, felt as instinct or a subtle bodily knowing.
- Ego Authority — your own will becomes your guide: What do you really want, and what do you want to put your willpower into?
- Self-Projected Authority — clarity can become audible as you speak and listen to your own voice.
- Mental Authority (environment) — for Projectors without an inner Authority; clarity can come when you talk a decision through out loud in the right environment, without others deciding for you.
- Lunar Authority — for Reflectors, an important decision gets time across a lunar cycle, so different perspectives can be experienced.
Your mind can think things through — but it doesn’t get the final say
Perhaps this is the part that feels most unfamiliar at first. Our minds can explain very convincingly why we should do something. They know past experiences, other people’s expectations, possible risks and plenty of sensible arguments. All of that can be useful. Human Design assumes, though, that these thoughts are not the same as your Authority.
That doesn’t mean you should ignore information or act irrationally. For a career, medical, financial or legal decision, you still need the relevant facts and, where appropriate, professional advice. Your Authority doesn’t replace that knowledge. It describes how you can move toward your own decision within the options you actually have.
And even a decision that feels right according to your Authority is no guarantee that everything will be easy or turn out the way you imagined. An experience can be hard and still come from a decision you didn’t make out of pressure, to fit in or to keep everyone happy. Your Authority isn’t an oracle for the future.
How to get to know your Authority
You don’t need to understand your Authority perfectly before you can start observing it. In fact, it usually only becomes familiar through your own experience. It’s best not to start with the biggest decision of your life. Everyday life is full of small situations where you can notice how your way of deciding works.
Someone asks whether you’d like to come along tonight. Or you’re wondering whether to buy something, agree to an appointment or accept an invitation. In situations like these, you can watch what happens inside you: Is there an immediate physical reaction? Do you need time? Does it get clearer when you talk about it? Experiences like these help you connect the description in your chart with what you actually experience.
At first, you may only notice some things afterwards. That doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong. If you’ve spent years deciding mainly by thinking things through, it often takes time to pick up on the subtler differences. It can help to take notes: What did I notice before the decision? What did my head say? How did the decision feel later on? Not to keep score of right and wrong decisions, but to get to know your own pattern.
Common misconceptions
- “Authority means always knowing right away what’s right.” No. Some Authorities respond instantly; others explicitly need time, a conversation or a longer window for decisions.
- “A strong feeling must be my Authority.” Not necessarily. An undefined emotional center can feel emotions very intensely without giving you Emotional Authority. What matters is the mechanics of your chart.
- “My Authority takes the responsibility off my shoulders.” No. It doesn’t replace information, responsibility, ethics or professional help. It shows you how to find your way to your own decision.
- “I only need it for big decisions.” Small everyday situations are especially useful, because you can watch how your way of deciding actually works without much pressure.
If you’re just getting to know your Authority: don’t try to produce a particular signal. First look up which Authority is in your chart, then watch for it in real situations. The description isn’t meant to tell you how to behave. It’s meant to help you recognize something you can gradually test against your own experience.

Can my Authority change over the course of my life?
Your Authority is derived from your birth chart and doesn’t change within the Human Design system. What can change is how well you perceive it. The more experience you gain with it, the more familiar your way of deciding can become.
What’s the difference between Strategy and Authority?
Your Strategy describes how you engage with life according to your Type. Your Authority shows what you can go by when a concrete decision is in front of you. That’s why Human Design usually looks at the two together.
I can’t feel my Authority — am I doing something wrong?
No. Not every Authority feels like a clear inner signal, and your own perception can feel unfamiliar, especially at first. Start by observing small decisions and give yourself time to compare the description with your own experience. With Emotional, Mental or Lunar Authority, time or a particular process is explicitly part of how you decide.
