What Is Human Design?

A system that calculates a bodygraph from your birth data. Here you’ll find out what the chart is meant to show, which layers it contains and where it makes most sense to start.

The first time you come across Human Design, a whole vocabulary lands on you at once: Type, Strategy, Authority, centers, gates, channels, Profile. It can look more complicated than it needs to be. At its heart, Human Design is a tool for self-exploration. Your date, time and place of birth are used to calculate a chart, the bodygraph. You can then read it like a map — one that helps you notice certain patterns and differences in how you experience life.

Where does Human Design come from?

Human Design was founded by Ra Uru Hu in the late 1980s. It draws on several traditions and symbolic systems, among them the I Ching, astrology, the chakra system and the Kabbalah, and it borrows terms and images from genetics and physics. Those borrowings don’t turn it into a scientific model, though.

That’s why a simple attitude helps in practice: you don’t have to accept the descriptions as the truth about you. Treat them as an experiment and see in your everyday life whether — and how — you recognize yourself in them. That is how theory turns into personal experience.

What does your bodygraph show?

The bodygraph is made up of nine centers, 64 gates and 36 channels, which can link certain centers together. Some centers in your chart are colored in, others are white. A colored center is defined, a white one is undefined. In Human Design, definition stands for the areas whose basic way of working stays fairly consistent for you. Undefined areas are seen as more open to influences and experiences from the people and places around you.

Several layers are read from the chart as a whole. When you’re starting out, these four are the most useful:

A chart holds many more layers than that. You don’t have to understand them all at once. Especially at the beginning, Human Design usually makes more sense if you observe the basics first and go deeper later.

The types in Human Design

Human Design distinguishes four basic aura types: Generator, Manifestor, Projector and Reflector. Mechanically, the Manifesting Generator belongs to the Generator family, but many presentations list it as a fifth type of its own. So depending on the source, you’ll read about four types or five.

In Human Design, your Type is derived from the definition in your chart. Each Type comes with its own aura and its own Strategy.

The Manifesting Generator combines the Generator aura and the Strategy of responding with a motor connected to the Throat. That’s why many calculators and introductions list it separately, even though mechanically it belongs to the Generator family.

Strategy and Authority — where to actually start

If you’re new to Human Design, you don’t need to understand every gate and channel straight away. Type, Strategy and Authority give you a practical foundation first. Your Strategy describes how, according to your Type, you engage with situations and opportunities. Your Authority shows you what to go by when a concrete decision is in front of you.

Knowing the terms by heart isn’t what makes this interesting. Watch for them in your everyday life. Perhaps you notice that you often rush decisions even though your way of deciding needs time. Or that you try to get things started when what you actually need first is a response or an invitation. Or that some descriptions don’t show up at all the way you expected. That’s exactly what the experiment is for.

A good place to start: don’t read your chart as a fixed verdict on your personality. Begin with Type, Strategy and Authority and notice what you recognize in real situations. The other layers become easier to understand over time, as you link them to your own experience.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need my exact birth time?

For the most accurate chart, you should know your birth time as precisely as possible. Depending on how uncertain it is and which activations change within that window, parts of the chart can shift. If you don’t know your exact time, it’s worth comparing several possible times rather than simply assuming that Type, Authority or Profile stay the same.

Is Human Design scientifically proven?

No. Human Design is not a scientifically validated model. It brings together various spiritual and symbolic systems and shouldn’t be confused with scientific diagnostics or psychological research. You can use it as a tool for self-exploration and see for yourself whether particular descriptions or experiments help you.

Where do I start?

With Type, Strategy and Authority. They give you a manageable foundation you can watch for in everyday life. Centers, gates, channels, Profile and the other layers can follow step by step.
