Your Profile isn’t a personality test or a fixed character role. In Human Design, it describes a recurring movement through life: how you gather knowledge and experience, how you come across to others and which themes may keep coming up over the course of your life.
The two numbers: conscious and unconscious
Every Profile combines two of the six lines. The first number belongs to the conscious Personality side of your chart; it’s often the one you identify with more easily. The second number belongs to the unconscious body side, the Design. It may feel less obvious to you, which is why others sometimes recognize it in you before you do. Both lines are equally part of your Profile; it’s their combination that creates its particular dynamic.
The six lines
The six lines describe different ways of meeting life. Their traditional names are just shorthand. What matters is how they actually show up in everyday life:
Read the ladder from the bottom up: line 1 at the bottom, line 6 at the top.
Lines 1–3 form the lower trigram and are focused more on your own process. With lines 4–6 in the upper trigram, other people come more clearly into play. That doesn’t mean every Profile with an upper line is automatically a “transpersonal Profile,” though. Whether a Profile as a whole counts as personal, juxtaposition or transpersonal depends on the specific combination.
The twelve profiles at a glance
The six lines give rise to twelve fixed Profile combinations. They’re not a ranking, and none is more evolved than another. Each combination brings its two lines together in its own way:
Profile isn’t Authority — and it isn’t destiny
As revealing as a Profile can be, it isn’t a rule for making decisions. It describes how you gain experience, learn and come across to others. Whether a concrete opportunity is right for you is something Human Design leaves to your Type, Strategy and inner Authority. You can’t derive a career choice from your Profile alone, either. Two people with the same Profile can lead completely different lives, because the rest of their chart and their actual circumstances are different.
Common misconceptions
- “6/2s are automatically wise, 3s always make mistakes.” No. The third line gains insight through experience, trial and error. With the sixth line, perspective doesn’t come automatically with the number — it develops over the course of its life process.
- “The second number matters less because it’s unconscious.” No. It’s as much part of the Profile as the first number. Often other people see this body side even more clearly than you do yourself.
- “My Profile tells me what to do for a living.” No. It can say something about how you learn, how you come across or how you experience relationships, but it can’t prescribe a particular career.
- “Some Profiles go together and others don’t.” Two Profile numbers don’t tell you anything reliable about a relationship. The interplay of two charts is far more complex — and a real relationship even more so.
Look at the bigger picture. A Profile makes more sense when you don’t read it in isolation. Your Type, Authority, centers, channels and the specific lines of your Sun and Earth all shape how this basic movement actually shows up in your life.

How do I find out my Profile?
Your Profile is derived from the lines of your conscious and unconscious Sun and Earth. The first number belongs to the Personality side at the moment of your birth; the second belongs to the Design side, which in Human Design is calculated about 88 degrees of the Sun’s movement before birth. You don’t have to work it out yourself: the Bodygraph Calculator shows your Profile right away as two numbers, such as 1/3 or 5/1.
Why do others sometimes see me differently than I see myself?
The second Profile number belongs to the unconscious body side. So a quality there can be more obvious to the people around you than to you. That doesn’t mean others see you more “accurately” in general — only that this part of your mechanics isn’t connected to your conscious self-image in the same way.
Does my Profile change over the course of my life?
In Human Design, the Profile combination in your birth chart stays the same. What can change is how you experience and work with those two lines. This is especially visible in Profiles with a sixth line, because that line describes its own maturing process across several phases of life.
How does your Profile show up in your whole chart?
The two Profile numbers are only part of the picture. In the Basic Reading, we connect them with your Type, Authority, centers, gates and channels. That turns two lines into a description you’ll recognize much more precisely in your own everyday life.
