Alongside the Sun, Earth and planets, your chart also shows the North Node and the South Node. They’re not additional decision-makers, and they’re not a second Incarnation Cross. In the language of Human Design, they give the stage a direction: What kind of environment and perspective accompanies your path, and how does that emphasis shift over the course of your life?
Two points, not planets
Astronomically, the lunar nodes aren’t celestial bodies. They mark the two opposite points where the plane of the Moon’s orbit crosses the ecliptic — the Sun’s apparent path. That’s why the North and South Nodes always sit opposite each other.
In Human Design, the nodes are calculated on both the Personality and the Design side. The Personality side belongs to the moment of birth. The Design side — like the rest of the Design part of the chart — comes from the moment when the Sun stood about 88 degrees before its birth position. That’s roughly three months, but not a fixed number of 88 calendar days.
Why the image of a road helps
Don’t picture your life as a train that has to reach a fixed destination — think of it more as a long road. Your Incarnation Cross describes an overarching theme, your Profile a recurring pattern of roles and learning. The lunar nodes add the surroundings and the perspective in which you meet those themes.
This can be very concrete. The same person experiences themselves differently in different social, professional or physical settings, even though their design stays the same. In Human Design, the nodes describe exactly this layer of the “stage” or the “road” — not as a geographical prediction, but as thematic context.
South Node first, North Node later
Traditionally, the first half of life is linked more strongly to the South Node. That’s where you gather experience in surroundings that gradually become familiar. Around the Uranus Opposition — usually in midlife — the emphasis increasingly shifts to the North Node.
The transition around the Uranus Opposition
This transition isn’t a switch that flips. You don’t wake up on a particular birthday on a completely different road. It’s more helpful to picture the same journey reaching a new stretch: other experiences become more important, your view shifts, and some things that used to be in the background come more clearly into focus.
The line colors the kind of road
As with the gates, the six lines play a role for the lunar nodes too. Because the North and South Nodes sit opposite each other, they share the same line. So the line can be read as an extra description of how you experience these surroundings or this perspective. The images below are deliberately brief — they aren’t rules for how to behave:
- Line 1 — Foundation.
Your surroundings become easier to navigate once you can get to know them and build solid ground within them.
- Line 2 — Space of your own and resonance.
A rhythm of your own and selective contact can matter; other people can point out opportunities, without that turning into an obligation to wait.
- Line 3 — Experience and correction.
You learn the road by actually walking it: trying things, noticing what works and adjusting how you handle it when needed.
- Line 4 — Relationship and familiarity.
People, networks and recurring contacts can strongly shape your surroundings. That doesn’t mean strangers can’t play a role.
- Line 5 — Projection and practical impact.
Others may form expectations of you or your role in a setting early on. So it becomes important to be clear about what really belongs to you.
- Line 6 — Maturation and overview.
How you perceive your surroundings can change over the phases of life: from direct experience to more distance, and later to a perspective you actually live.
What the lunar nodes are not
- Not a goal you have to reach. The North Node isn’t homework for the second half of your life.
- Not a decision-maker. Whether a concrete yes or no is right for you is up to your Type, Strategy and inner Authority.
- Not a second life theme. The nodes add context to your chart; they don’t replace your Incarnation Cross or your Profile.
- Not a geographical prediction. “Road” and “surroundings” are images for a mechanical and thematic layer of the chart — not a statement about which city you have to live in.
Which nodes are in your chart?
In the Incarnation Cross Calculator, you’ll find the lunar nodes and their lines alongside your life theme. That way you can see which themes describe your “road” in Human Design. Your data stays with you.

Are these the same lunar nodes as in astrology?
Astronomically, they’re the same points. But the interpretation isn’t the same. Human Design assigns their positions to the 64 gates and lines of the Rave Mandala and uses its own language for them. So astrological ideas about past lives or karmic debts don’t need to be carried over into the Human Design interpretation.
Does my life change completely around 40?
No. Around the Uranus Opposition, the emphasis can shift from the South Node to the North Node, but it’s not a sudden restart. Often you only see in hindsight that your surroundings, your perspective or the kind of experiences you have changed gradually.
Where can I see my lunar nodes?
You’ll find them in the planet list of your chart. Our Incarnation Cross Calculator also puts them in the context of your life theme, angle and lines.
